About Loctician
Loctician is a directory of loc specialists across the UK. We started it because finding a good loctician is harder than it should be. You should not have to scroll Instagram for hours or drive two cities over on a recommendation.
Why this directory exists
Anyone who’s started a loc journey in the UK knows how hard it is to find the right loctician. Instagram works if you know which hashtags to follow, but it’s slow, scattered, and biased toward the locticians who post most often – not necessarily the best ones near you.
Word of mouth works if you know loc-wearers in your area. Most people don’t.
Existing directories are dated, US-focused, or so cluttered with unrelated salons that finding a real loctician takes longer than just trying a different city.
Loctician.co.uk fixes this. It’s a UK-focused directory built specifically for the loc community: real prices, real photos, real specialists. Whether you’re starting your loc journey or maintaining locs you’ve grown for a decade, you should be able to find your loctician in under five minutes.
What we do
We list UK locticians and loc specialists by city and by service. Every listing includes the basics — business name, area, services, contact details — and the locticians themselves add their portfolios, prices, and booking links.
We publish editorial about the UK loc scene through our journal: pricing guides, method comparisons, loctician spotlights, and practical advice for people at every stage.
What we don’t do
Some things we want to be clear about, because the loc community has been let down by platforms before.
- We don’t take a cut, sell data, or fake editorial. No commission on bookings, no selling client data, no paid placements dressed up as editorial. Featured listings — our paid tier — are always clearly marked.
- We don’t certify or rank locticians. Our Verified badge confirms a business is real and the work shown is genuinely theirs. It’s not an accreditation or a quality ranking. Who you book is your call.
- We’re not a booking platform. Book a loctician through the directory and that’s a direct relationship between you and them. We’re the introduction; they’re the service.
- We don’t extract value from locticians’ work. Locticians own their photos, their words, and their relationships. We display content with permission and remove it on request, no questions asked.
How we work with locticians
Free listings are populated in two ways:
- Locticians who add themselves – via our submission form, with full control over what’s published.
- Locticians we’ve added based on public information – business name, area, and a small number of photos sourced from publicly visible Instagram profiles, with the original creator credited.
If you’ve found your business listed and you’d rather not be, email us and we’ll remove the listing within 3 working days. No friction, no questions.
Locticians who claim their listing get full control over the content, photos, and contact methods displayed. Featured subscribers add more photos, prominent placement, and direct booking integration. Details on the For Locticians page.
Who’s behind Loctician.co.uk
Loctician.co.uk was started by Len Johnson, because he couldn’t find a decent UK loctician directory when he needed one. It was built by someone in the loc community, for the community — not an outsider capitalising on a culture, but someone solving a problem he’s lived with himself. His own loc journey taught him what was missing from the existing options, and what locticians and clients actually needed from a directory that takes the work seriously.

The editorial content on the site is researched and written carefully, often with input from locticians working in the UK. Where individual writers contribute to specific pieces, they’re credited by name.
Respect for the loc community
Locs are a Black-cultural-heritage hairstyle. The UK loc community has been built over generations by Black women, men, and non-binary loc-wearers, and by the locticians who serve them — many of whom have learned their craft through community knowledge rather than formal training routes.
We approach this with care. We use “locs” as the more commonly preferred term in the UK community today. We don’t traffic in stereotypes. We don’t romanticise the loc journey or sanitise its challenges. We try to write about pricing, methods, and choices in the way locticians and loc-wearers actually talk about them.
If we get something wrong, tell us. We’d rather hear it and correct it than have it sit on the site.
